Atiku Reveals Trump’s Support for His Plan to Restore Fuel Subsidy

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that United States President Donald Trump supports his proposal to reintroduce fuel subsidies in Nigeria if he wins the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku made the claim through a statement issued by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, titled “Atiku Boasts of Stakeholders, Trump Support on Fuel Subsidy.”

The former vice president said his proposed policy would be different from the traditional fuel subsidy system, as it would focus on encouraging local production and refining while helping to reduce the cost of petrol for Nigerian consumers.

According to Atiku, his plan would see the government provide support for petroleum products produced and refined locally instead of depending heavily on imported fuel.

He argued that boosting domestic refining capacity and increasing the availability of locally produced petroleum products could improve supply, ease pressure on consumers and ultimately help bring down prices at filling stations.

Explaining his position, Atiku said the objective of what he described as a “Production Subsidy” is to ensure that government support translates into cheaper energy for ordinary Nigerians.

“This is why my Production Subsidy is about putting money back into people’s pockets. Support what we produce and refine here, increase supply, monitor the price and make sure Nigerians feel the benefit at the pump,” he said.

Atiku also referenced the Crude Oil Refiners Association of Nigeria (CORAN), saying the group has advocated greater support for domestic production.

He further argued that the United States recognises the importance of supporting strategic energy production and claimed that Trump backs the return of fuel subsidies.

The ADC candidate also criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, accusing the government of opposing measures aimed at providing relief to Nigerians while offering waivers, incentives and concessions to multinational companies and businesses.

His comments come amid the continuing debate over fuel pricing, domestic refining and how the Nigerian government can reduce the impact of energy costs on households and businesses.
