King Charles Clarifies Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal Status After UK Return
King Charles III has made it clear that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to spend an extended period in the United Kingdom has not resulted in any change to their official status within the Royal Family.
Harry and Meghan stepped away from their roles as senior working royals in 2020 before relocating to California. Six years later, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have returned to Britain with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, for an extended stay.
Despite their return, however, the couple has not resumed official royal duties.
A letter issued by Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon on September 7 stated that there had been “no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”
The letter explained that Harry and Meghan’s use of the styles His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness remains suspended and that the titles are not currently used by the couple.
It also clarified that their charitable activities continue to be carried out privately rather than as representatives of the monarchy.
“Their charitable work is a personal matter for them both,” the letter stated, describing their position as similar to that of private citizens who have commercial and charitable interests.
Harry and Meghan Are Still Not Working Royals
The statement also reiterated that Harry and Meghan gave up their responsibility to represent the monarch when they stepped back from royal duties.
According to the clarification, the couple remains outside the group of working members of the Royal Family who officially carry out duties on behalf of the Sovereign.
Their position also allows them greater independence over their finances and personal privacy, while the Royal Household says that arrangement will continue to be respected.
Harry and Meghan Return to the UK With Their Children
Harry and Meghan reportedly arrived in the UK with Archie and Lilibet on August 26, shortly after reports emerged that the family was planning an extended stay in Britain.
The couple's children are also reportedly attending a British school temporarily as the family settles into its time in the country.
Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, is understood to have remained in Los Angeles while the family spends time in the UK.
Although Harry and Meghan have not publicly provided extensive details about their plans, their return has attracted considerable attention because of their long-standing concerns about their children's privacy.
The couple has previously spoken about wanting to protect Archie and Lilibet from intense media attention, particularly from the British tabloid press.
During a 2022 interview with The Cut, Meghan discussed her concerns about the possibility of her children's school routines becoming a media spectacle.
She argued that wanting to protect her children from unwanted attention should not be confused with being overly concerned about privacy.
No Return to Official Royal Duties
For now, Harry and Meghan's return to Britain does not appear to signal a return to royal duties.
The latest clarification from the Royal Household makes the distinction clear: the couple can maintain personal, charitable and commercial interests while remaining outside the working structure of the monarchy.
Their extended stay in the UK may therefore bring them physically closer to the Royal Family, but it does not change the arrangement established after their departure from official royal life in 2020.
